The warring factions were, on one hand, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) with the support of the Communist Bloc (Soviets and China) and on the other hand, the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) with the military and logistic support of United States (which was also assisted by Australia, South Korea, Philippines, New Zealand and Thailand with combat troops). Other countries such as Germany, Iran, Morocco, the United Kingdom and Switzerland contributed with material supplies and medical equipment. Taiwan and Spain moved a small group of military doctors in health mission also to support the USA.
